Adam Elliott - adult care apprentice

Adam says applying for a health and social care apprenticeship with Sanctuary was the best decision he ever made.

Based in Bury St Edmunds at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Hilltop House, which provides care and support for adults with a range of physical disabilities, Adam’s role sees him working closely with tenants, providing support to help them live as independently as possible.

After finishing his GCSEs, Adam found out about the opportunity with Sanctuary while researching apprenticeships online.

He said: “I was still unsure what I wanted to do at this point but an apprenticeship and the opportunity to gain hands-on experience stood out to me.

“I’ve always wanted a career where I felt I was making a real difference and I wanted to see first-hand whether care was as fulfilling as I thought it would be.”

Adam started at Hilltop House in September 2019 and says he has enjoyed every moment of his apprenticeship so far.

He said: “It has been an amazing opportunity and I’m so glad I applied. It’s the best decision I ever made.

“The classroom setting wasn’t for me and I believe I will achieve so much more learning practically. I receive great support from my tutor and all the staff here, and the management team are always on hand if I need anything.”

The knowledge that he is making a real difference to people’s lives is the thing Adam values most about his apprenticeship.

“Making a difference means a lot to me and the job satisfaction is definitely a highlight,” he said.

“I enjoy giving my time to tenants, painting and chatting with them or taking them shopping, it all contributes to building professional relationships.”

Adam hopes to continue working at Hilltop House after completing his apprenticeship and in the future would like to explore other opportunities with Sanctuary, in areas such as housing or homelessness services.

He explained: “Wherever my career takes me, I can see a bright future with Sanctuary that I may not have considered prior to applying for my apprenticeship.

“Learning on the job gives me a huge sense of purpose and I believe the training and experience that I’m receiving will open doors for me. I cannot recommend apprenticeships highly enough.”
