A picture of Ben's story

Ben Hyde - accountancy apprentice

Ben’s apprenticeship with Sanctuary has been full of opportunities – from visiting the House of Commons to winning the prestigious Worcestershire Apprentice of the Year Award.

When looking at options for his future after studying at sixth form, Ben knew he would prefer to continue his education in a hands-on role rather than heading to university.

He said: “I was keen to get started in a working environment in my chosen field. I learned about Sanctuary’s apprenticeship scheme and thought it was a great programme, offering lots of opportunities.”

Ben joined Sanctuary as an accountancy apprentice in September 2016, working in the Government Procurement Card (GPC) team arranging and managing company credit cards for staff from different business areas, before recently moving to the central services team to continue his apprenticeship.

Ben explained: “My apprenticeship has been a great opportunity to build working experience while gaining a qualification at the same time.

“For me, the best thing about my apprenticeship is the people I get to work with and the support I receive from my line managers, the apprentice co-ordinators and the Learning Academy to help me build-up my skills.”

A highlight of Ben’s apprenticeship was the opportunity to visit the House of Commons with the West Midlands Young Apprentice Ambassador Network.

He said: “We were invited to attend a reception organised by the then Minister for Apprenticeships, Robert Halfon MP.

“We met other networks from across the country and were able to hear from the minister about his opinions on apprenticeships and his plans for the future.”

In November 2017, Ben’s progress and dedication to his apprenticeship saw him named both Intermediate Level Apprentice of the Year and overall Worcestershire Apprentice of the Year at the Worcestershire Apprenticeship Awards.

Ben added: “I had attended the awards ceremony the previous year and saw other Sanctuary apprentices picking up awards, which was a real inspiration to me.

“I’m grateful for the support I have received on my Sanctuary apprenticeship and would recommend it to anyone.”

Ben has now progressed onto the level 3 Accountancy apprenticeship after completing his level 2 apprenticeship in September 2017.
