A picture of Ellis' story

Ellis Upton - horticulture apprentice

Having previously tried several jobs that he didn’t really enjoy, an apprenticeship with Sanctuary was an opportunity that Ellis was determined to make the most of.

He said: “Before starting with Sanctuary I was in and out of factory work, which I didn’t really enjoy.

“I became aware of Sanctuary’s apprenticeship scheme through the Government apprentice website and realised it would be a great way for me to earn and learn at the same time.”

After successfully applying for the scheme, Ellis started his Level 2 Horticulture and Landscape Operative apprenticeship in September 2017 and is enjoying every moment of it.

As well as the variety in his role, Ellis values being able to combine hands-on learning in a workplace environment with studying towards his qualifications.

He explained: “I enjoy all my tasks and the fact that there is always something new and challenging every day.

“My main responsibility is to ensure our grounds are maintained to a high standard. One of the things I enjoy most is learning about parts of the environment that I previously had no idea about.”

Ellis says he has felt supported every step of the way by colleagues and the Learning Academy during his time at Sanctuary and would have no hesitation in recommending an apprenticeship to anyone.

He said: “I can’t speak highly enough of my support and mentoring. My line manager is always on hand, my buddy always helps me and I am always allowed time to complete my college work.

“The scheme offers so many opportunities. I am still at the beginning, but I believe being offered the apprenticeship has been the biggest opportunity of all.

“Once I have completed my apprenticeship I would like to stay with Sanctuary and hopefully take every opportunity offered to me.”
