A picture of George's story

George Baldwin - accountancy apprentice

It was a week spent on work experience at Sanctuary while studying for his A-Levels that first alerted accountancy apprentice George to the opportunities offered by the Group’s apprenticeship programme.

Already eyeing a career in finance, at that point George was part-way through his first year studying accounting, business studies and government and politics at Worcester Sixth Form College.

He said: “During my work experience with Sanctuary I had the opportunity to speak to current apprentices and find out more about what the benefits of an apprenticeship were.

“It was clear that the apprenticeship programme would offer me a great opportunity to get an insight into how a finance department works within a national organisation, gaining valuable experience and allowing me to study for a qualification at the same time.”

After finishing at college, George joined Sanctuary as an accountancy apprentice in March 2017.

Currently working within the non-rental debtors team, part of the wider accounts receivable team, he is involved in raising invoices for many of the services Sanctuary provides, ensuring new clients’ contracts are set up correctly and helping with any enquiries the team receives.

George, who hopes to go on to qualify as a chartered accountant after completing his apprenticeship, feels the variety of his role and the support he receives from colleagues and the Learning Academy are giving him the perfect introduction to a career in finance.

He added: “Sanctuary’s apprenticeship scheme is very good as it has enabled me to learn so many new skills in such a short space of time. Being able to rotate between departments is useful as it has allowed me to see the many different aspects of finance within Sanctuary.

“I enjoy being able to learn from more experienced members of staff, who are willing to share their knowledge with me, offer feedback and answer any questions I may have.”

In November 2018 George gained a permanent position within the Care Management Accounts team.  George also won the 'Excellence in Accountancy' award at the 2018 Herefordshire and Worcestershire Group Training Association awards evening.
