Ellie Chambers – Graduate Case Study

After studying a degree in International Business and Management at Aston University, Ellie was looking for a socially minded challenging graduate scheme that would support her professional development.

“I’ve never been motivated by profit however it’s rare to find a not for profit organisation where you’re able to gain the experience and professional development of the corporate environment.”

Sanctuary offers the opportunity for both. It’s great to know that being ambitious and commercially successful translates into support to people who need it most in society.”

Ellie will work within the Group’s Development sector and has joined the Regeneration team for her first placement, analysing Sanctuary’s portfolio of properties and the renovation of sites from London to Glasgow.

Ellie is also working on an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion project, investigating how Sanctuary’s housing specifications could be adjusted to make standard house types more accessible.

She says: “It’s great that Sanctuary are being active around issues of inclusion, challenging the way things have been done in the past to ensure that the homes we’re building meet the needs of our customers.”

Ellie will also spend time in the Construction, Finance and Sales and Marketing teams. She says: “the placement system gives you experience working with people and in areas of the business you might never have access to or have considered specialising in normally.”

“I’m really looking forward to the construction placement as it’s something I have no prior knowledge of. I’m keen to see first-hand how Sanctuary are confronting sector wide issues such as fuel poverty, fire safety, and the shortage of affordable housing in the UK.”

Ellie said  “After university, I knew I wanted to work in an industry with a key role to play in the climate crisis.  I’m excited to push for innovation and a more sustainable approach wherever possible, within the housing sector and across the Group.”

It’s been challenging starting work in a global pandemic, however, everyone at Sanctuary has been so welcoming. I recommend the scheme to anyone wanting to learn and progress within a supportive network of people and an organisation that puts people first.
