A picture of Middlesbrough support service celebrates ‘Good’ CQC rating

A Middlesbrough supported housing service for people with learning disabilities is celebrating its recent ‘Good’ rating by the Care Quality Commission – following its first assessment since opening last year.

Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) services at The Shore, on Ellerbeck Way, which provides supported housing for people with learning disabilities, received the grade following the report’s publication in June.

The Shore opened in 2016 as a joint project between Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Galliford Try Partnerships North East, owners Coast & Country and SSL, which delivers 24-hour personalised support packages to residents.

Among the findings, the report described SSL’s service as ‘effective’ and ‘caring’, adding that care was tailored to meet people’s needs while treating them with respect.

Its assessor noted that: “People told us staff were caring and kind. Staff encouraged people to be involved with communal activities but respected their decision if they did not want to participate.”

It added: “The service supported people to express their views and be actively involved in making decisions about their daily care and support. We found staff made sure the care and support was tailored to each individual's preferences.

“It was evident from discussion that all staff knew people very well, including their personal history preferences, likes and dislikes, and had used this knowledge to form very strong therapeutic relationships.”

One resident was quoted as saying: “I have no worries here; if I did I would tell the staff. It is good that there is someone in the office that I can ring down to if I have a problem and that alongside this I have designated support hours.”

SSL local service manager Rebekah McClelland, who was newly trained and registered specifically for the service, said: “We’re delighted with this report, which in many ways verifies a lot of our core principles, such as how our residents receive personalised support that’s tailored to their individual needs.

“While we always work closely with our residents so their service is the best it can be, it was reassuring to hear their positive feedback to the Commission and it’s great to hear how happy they are with the support.”
