For Gary, Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL) offered a way to improve peoples’ lives, while also learning more about his son’s autism.

As Local Service Manager of Eastgate, a residential care home for young adults with learning disabilities in Stoke-on-Trent, Gary oversees the delivery of the service which supports residents to live independently.

Gary is responsible for ensuring his team delivers the best possible standard of care and support as well as the service’s compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulations.

Gary explained: “My life and work direction changed in 2000 when my son, who was two at the time, was diagnosed with Autism – so I wanted to learn more about the condition.”

To that end, Gary took a job at a purpose-built autism home and has since worked with numerous companies as a care worker, a senior home manager and a regional manager, before joining SSL in 2016.

He added: “I have always chosen to work in places with the mindset of ‘would I place my son in the service?’ and with Sanctuary I absolutely would.

“There is a very friendly family feel to Sanctuary and I like the contact I’m able to have on a day to day basis with our residents.

“I have lots of support from senior management and other managers in SSL who have been very patient with me. The most rewarding thing is working with others who are always looking to improve the lives of the clients and the work environment for the staff.”
