Worcester-based Sanctuary Group has shown its support for breaking the silence that surrounds mental health in the workplace by signing the Time to Change Employer Pledge.

To coincide with Time to Talk Day (1 February), the leading social housing and care provider has joined a list of over 450 organisations to show support for the growing social movement, run by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness.

The Time to Change Employer Pledge demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to changing how people think and act about mental health in the workplace and making sure its employees who are facing these problems feel supported.

Sanctuary employs over 1,000 staff in the city and the pledge underpins the supported living services it provides across the country to adults aged 18 or over, helping them manage their mental health and maximise their independence.

David Bennett, Sanctuary Group’s Chief Executive, commented: “As an organisation that cares for those with mental health needs, we are proud to sign the Time to Change pledge and encourage positive discussion about mental health.

Our employees’ health and wellbeing is a key priority for us and we hope that by being part of this campaign we are able to further raise awareness and destigmatise mental health.

Jo Loughran, Interim Director of Time to Change, added: “We know it can be hard to talk about mental health, which is why we’re supporting employers to open up; to talk and to listen.

Too many people with mental health problems are made to feel isolated, ashamed and worthless, but with the right support, those of us with mental health problems can recover and have equal opportunities in all areas of life. Everyone’s attitude makes a difference and it’s fantastic to see organisations like Sanctuary Group taking the lead.

Time to Change is funded by the Department of Health, Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Fund and was set up to create a positive shift in public attitudes towards mental health problems.
