A picture of Sanctuary Group increases new affordable housing

Leading housing provider Sanctuary Group is working with Homes England to increase the affordable housing being built through its current development programme.

Sanctuary has switched 250 homes which were planned to be market sale to instead be for affordable housing in an immediate response to the housing crisis. The homes are currently being built and will be ready to move into over the next 18 months allowing Sanctuary to deliver more homes as more sites can be brought forward - and faster.

Sanctuary is working with Homes England to maximise its new affordable housing provision after the Government confirmed a total of £9 billion funding to build affordable homes across England.

The homes are part of Sanctuary’s response to the housing crisis to build 30,000 new homes over the next ten years, the majority of which will be new social or affordable housing.

It is currently building 2,000 homes and has more than 4,000 in its development pipeline scheduled to complete by the end of 2020.

The new homes will be built in Sanctuary’s focus regions of the North West, South West and South East. As a Group, Sanctuary currently manages 100,000 homes in England and Scotland.

David Bennett, Sanctuary Group Chief Executive, commented: “We exist to provide affordable housing: it has been our core charitable purpose for almost 50 years.

“We are proud to be working in partnership with the Government to deliver as many homes for affordable rent as possible.”

Homes England will play a major role in fixing the housing market by intervening in markets to help Government to achieve its ambition to deliver an average of 300,000 homes a year by the mid-2020s, and Sanctuary is keen to be a major contributor to that success.

Jackie Jacob, General Manager for Housing Programmes at Homes England, said: “At Homes England, we are clear that the housing association sector needs to mobilise and bring their capacity to sit alongside our investment finance, land and expertise to expand the delivery of affordable new homes and wider house building. Sanctuary is stepping up to play its part in getting ambitious forward delivery plans in place.”
