A picture of Time, knowledge and patience go a long way for technology volunteer

A Banbury charity that was experiencing difficulties with their IT equipment have benefited from the expertise of a technology specialist who gave his time to support them through his employer’s volunteering programme.

Let’s Play, an after-school and holiday club that supports 100 families in North Oxfordshire, turned to Sanctuary to ask for help when their computer systems started to run increasingly slowly.

Spencer Turner, a support technician from Sanctuary Group in Worcester, was able to rectify the problems as part of the not-for-profit organisation’s employee volunteering scheme.

Upon his initial visit to Let’s Play, Spencer quickly identified the most suitable equipment, software, bandwidth and cloud to enable the team to complete tasks on multiple devices and access the internet through a secure network.

A few weeks later Spencer returned with hardware including a laptop, four widescreen monitors and four PC laptops installed with Microsoft Office 2010, all sourced from supplier OCM.

Tracey Owen, assistant manager at Let’s Play, said: “Spencer’s knowledge and efficiency really made everything so much easier when it came to upgrading our equipment.

“His time, knowledge and patience were invaluable – we simply do not have this support in house. The office now looks incredibly professional - but more importantly we are all networked, compatible and super-efficient.

“As a small charity we rely on charitable donations and services to fill the gaps that our funding doesn’t provide.

“The money we have saved on office equipment means we can now focus on the activities and service that we deliver to the 100 families we support in North Oxfordshire.”

Spencer added: “It’s a nice feeling to have helped such a good cause, especially as they were so grateful for the support. I thoroughly enjoyed helping them.”

Sanctuary’s employee volunteering scheme has been supporting volunteer placements for staff since 2013.

Through the scheme, employees have the chance to volunteer for up to two days per year in the communities Sanctuary supports.
