Two community-minded Sanctuary Group apprentices stepped away from their usual day jobs to lend a helping hand at a social hub in Shiregreen.

Gas fitting apprentices Sam Price and Jack Targett spent a morning volunteering at Café Valentine to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

Café Valentine is a community hub for local residents, run by staff and volunteers from Shiregreen United Reformed Church (URC) and supported by Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund.

Aimed at helping people make new connections within their community, the weekly sessions offer people of all ages the chance to take part in activities and enjoy a relaxed chat over something to eat.

Sam and Jack were keen to volunteer at the project to learn more about the local communities Sanctuary serve and experience something different from their day-to-day work.

They got stuck into a variety of tasks during their time at the café, including preparing food, taking orders and helping to clear tables.

Sam said: “Jack and I were keen to try to give something back to the local community and learn new skills as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

“Everyone was very welcoming and we both enjoyed spending time at Café Valentine and the chance to meet some of our local residents.”

Lisa Wigfield, church and community development officer at Shiregreen URC, added: “We really enjoyed having Jack and Sam join us and their efforts were greatly appreciated by both the organisers and everyone attending the café.”

National Apprenticeship Week is an annual event, organised by the National Apprenticeship Service, which celebrates the talents and skills of apprentices and promotes the value of apprenticeship programmes.

Sanctuary’s award-winning national apprenticeship programme offers a wide variety of programmes, from level two up to degree level. It was established in 2008 and has since supported almost 2,000 people into work, both directly and through development partners.
