A picture of Libby's story

Libby Harris – accountancy apprentice

Libby was attracted to an apprenticeship with Sanctuary by the opportunity to earn while learning and the chance to pursue her dream career in accountancy.

She said: “After finishing school I attended sixth form for a year and realised it wasn’t the right path for me.

“I didn’t want to go down the university route and felt that an apprenticeship held more opportunity, allowing me to earn and gain work experience while studying at the same time.”

After researching her options online, Libby successfully applied for an accountancy apprenticeship with Sanctuary and started in September 2017.

She said: “I was a little nervous due to this being my first proper job, however I settled in very quickly due to the welcoming nature of Sanctuary and all its employees.

“Apprentices are surrounded by support, everybody believes in you to succeed and the opportunities on offer are never-ending.”

An aspect of her apprenticeship that Libby particularly enjoys is getting to work in different teams and gaining experience and new skills in different areas of the organisation.

“This allows me to work with a range of people, learning new processes every day and is a great opportunity for an apprentice to progress in the direction that suits them best as an individual,” she said.

Libby’s current role is with the Government Procurement Card (GPC) team, arranging and managing company credit cards for staff from different business areas.

During her apprenticeship, she has also volunteered at one of Sanctuary’s care homes as part of the Employee Volunteering scheme and taken part in a Q&A session with directors.

But the biggest highlight of her apprenticeship so far is recently becoming a Young Apprentice Ambassador for the West Midlands.

She said: “I’m looking forward to sharing my experience of the apprenticeship programme and providing advice to others looking in this direction.

“I would highly recommend an apprenticeship as an amazing gateway to a successful career in your chosen field.

“As well as gaining a qualification and developing new skills on a daily basis, my apprenticeship has given me so much confidence and valuable experience of the working world.”
