Sanctuary Housing is inviting older residents in Chester to enjoy some colourful fun at its annual Purple Day celebration.

The free event, now in its 11th year, is open to everyone and is taking place at Kingsway Chapel, in Newton, from 11am-3pm on Wednesday 9 October.

Purple Day is an annual celebration for older people, held to coincide with Older People’s Day and inspired by the well-known Jenny Joseph Poem ‘Warning’, which opens with the line: ‘When I am an old woman I shall wear purple…’

Organised by Sanctuary’s Group of Older People Living in Sheltered Housing (GOSH Enterprises), this year’s event will feature a wide variety of activities and entertainment, including stalls, bingo, nail painting, Zumba Gold and live music.

Local organisations including Age UK, PennySmart and Deafness Support Network, along with Sanctuary’s maintenance and telecare teams, will be on hand to offer advice and information, while visitors will also be able to tuck into a tasty spread of free refreshments.

Parking will be available on-site and the venue is on the number 53 bus route, while free transport to and from the event can be arranged for Sanctuary residents otherwise unable to get there.

Maggi Dempsey, Sanctuary’s neighbourhood involvement officer, said: “Purple Day is one of the most popular events in our calendar and it’s always wonderful to see older people from all over Chester coming together to socialise and have fun.

“We look forward to welcoming lots of visitors to Kingsway Chapel for this year’s celebration and would like to say a big thank you to our GOSH group, who work so hard to make Purple Day such an enjoyable occasion for all.”

This project is funded by Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
